Bell’s Opera House was built in 1895 in downtown Hillsboro for a cost of $33,000, and was a gift to the town from Charles S. Bell, a local manufacturer and philanthropist. Typical for the opera houses of the period, the building’s first floor is dedicated to commercial space, while the second and third floors house the theater itself. Though the opera house closed decades ago, the Highland Community Preservation Group has developed a 10-year plan to restore and reopen the theater.
With the goal of turning Bell's Opera House into a cornerstone for downtown revitalization, the local sponsor's restoration is expected to begin with exterior work on the roof and gutter system. The project received a capital appropriation of $50,000 from the 127th General Assembly in Am. Sub. H.B. 562.
