The second-oldest zoo in America, the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden opened in 1875. Three of the zoo's original buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Cincinnati Zoo is an international leader in cat conservation with 18 cat species, half the cat species in the world.
The Cincinnati Zoo's Cat Canyon/SCARCE project will blend public exhibition, education and scientific research regarding small and large cats. Cat Canyon will feature a dramatic outdoor exhibit of large predators, such as lions, tigers, cheetahs, and leopards. A new indoor facility will show small cat species in large, natural environment settings. The small cat reproductive center will establish the first dedicated breeding facility (SCARCE) for endangered small cats at any North American zoo. The project received a capital appropriation of $1.5 million in Am. Sub. H.B. 562 of the 127th General Assembly.
