Historical Center - Information Technology for Access and Archives Library Automation

Historical Center - Information Technology for Access and Archives Library Automation

Facility

The Ohio Historical Center in Columbus was completed in 1970 to house the Ohio Historical Society’s central museum, archives, library and administrative staff.

Current Project

This project has created and improved an online collections catalog that provides information and access to historical records and artifacts that document Ohio’s history. State appropriations total more than $3.8 million, including a $364,000 appropriation in Am. Sub. H.B. 699 of the 126th General Assembly. During fiscal year 2008, funds were used to develop and provide digital-image training for users of Ohio Historical Society's online cultural resources inventory form, improve mechanisms for internal tracking and review status of online inventory submissions, and redesign the tracking databases for federal undertakings and tax-incentive projects reviewed by the society. Over 5,000 documents, objects, and printed materials were digitized during fiscal year 2008. The Ohio Historical Society also began a resource-sharing partnership with the State Library of Ohio to manage digital collections using CONTENTdm software. Funds also were used for the development of a SAN storage and backup infrastructure solution to manage the society's digital information created using this and previous appropriations.
