The facilities chosen for expenditure of funds through the emergency repairs line item are identified and prioritized by Ohio Historical Society staff. The Society administers these facilities as part of the state memorial system.
Since 1994, the state has appropriated over $4 million for emergency renovations and repairs to some of the more than 300 buildings and structures cared for by the Ohio Historical Society. The most recent appropriation was for $850,000 in Am. Sub. H.B. 562 of the 127th General Assembly. During fiscal year 2008, funds were used for additional preservation of the earthworks at Fort Ancient; to complete repairs and improvements at the Great Circle Earthworks in Newark, the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center, the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor, and at Glendower (prior to the site's transfer to the Warren County Historical Society); and for security improvements at several sites.
