Galion Penn Central Station was dedicated in December 1900. The depot served as division headquarters for the Cleveland, Chicago, Cincinnati and St. Louis Railroads, also known as the "Big Four," before closing in 1969. The train platform at the Galion station served for many years as a "whistle stop" for campaigning presidential candidates, including Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932 and Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952.
An initial $50,000 state appropriation helped fund the stabilization of the century-old railroad depot's structure and necessary roof work, which were completed in 2004. Two subsequent appropriations totaling $200,000 will be used for additional improvements to the facility.
