Lucas County is building a new 8,000-seat arena in downtown Toledo for minor-league hockey, arena football, concerts, and other events. The $115-million project will connect to the existing SeaGate Convention Center, located just one block from Toledo’s successful minor-league baseball stadium, Fifth Third Field. County officials anticipate it will be the first LEED-certified sports arena in the country. The arena’s first tenant is the Toledo Walleye, a minor-league hockey team owned by the Toledo Mud Hens. The team plans to play its inaugural season when the new arena opens in late 2009. Two state appropriations for the project total $7.7 million, and expenditure of the funds received Commission approval in July 2009.
