Serpent Mound, a National Historic Landmark, is the largest and finest serpent effigy in North America. The mound is within an area known as the Serpent Mound crypto explosion structure, which is an unusual geological feature in Ohio that is evident by the jumbled and broken subsurface bedrock. An appropriation of $295,000 in Am. Sub. H.B. 850 of the 122nd General Assembly funded a new picnic shelter, replacement of the museum roof, and a structural evaluation of the observation tower, which were completed in fiscal year 2006.
An appropriation of $340,000 in Am. Sub. H.B. 699 of the 126th General Assembly will fund interpretive and master planning for the site, as well as improvements to the museum and other buildings.
