Paul Laurence Dunbar House

Paul Laurence Dunbar House

Facility

This is the home of Paul Laurence Dunbar, the first African–American to gain national literary acclaim. Although Dunbar died in 1906 at the age of 33, his mother lived in the home and preserved his bedroom and study until her death in 1934. This National Historic Landmark is part of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. The Dunbar complex has been undergoing a phased restoration, and has received state appropriations totaling $1.04 million. The most recent renovations include an addition to the visitor center and restoration of the Dunbar house interior and exterior, and a renovation of the barn. Prior state appropriations financed other work at the complex, including exhibit galleries, a library, and staff offices.
