General Anthony Wayne vowed to “recover” this site near Fort Jefferson on the Wabash River after the crushing defeat of General Arthur St. Clair’s troops by the Miami Indians in 1791. An important victory at Fort Recovery, shortly after its completion in 1794, led to General Wayne’s success at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. The site, which features two reconstructed blockhouses with a connecting stockade, a granite monument, and a museum, is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Through a prior appropriation of $98,745, structures and exhibits were renovated and museum and fort roofs were replaced in 1998. An appropriation of $100,000 in Am. Sub. H.B. 699 of the 126th General Assembly will be used to improve the museum exhibits. Planning was initiated on the project during fiscal year 2008 in conjunction with the Fort Recovery Historical Society, which manages the site for the Ohio Historical Society.
