Named for Ohio Governor Return Jonathan Meigs, Fort Meigs was a sprawling log-and-earth fortification built along the Maumee River during the War of 1812. It was one of the largest log forts in America, and has been reconstructed to match its original appearance. The site is a National Historic Landmark. It has received a total of $6.2 million in state appropriations.
Reconstruction of the stockade, restoration of the blockhouses and the rest of the fort, and the construction of the museum and education center were completed in 2002. Exhibits in the blockhouses and the museum were completed for the grand opening of the site on May 3, 2003 -- for the 190th anniversary of the siege of Fort Meigs. New funds of $200,000 were appropriated in Am. Sub. H.B. 562 of the 127th General Assembly, and, in conjunction with the efforts of the city of Perrysburg, will be used to acquire land adjacent to the site.
