COSI Columbus, Ohio’s Center of Science and Industry, is a 21st-century science and learning center. Thirty-five years after opening in 1964, COSI relocated in 1999 to the west bank of the Scioto River in downtown Columbus. A provocative design by internationally acclaimed architect Arata Isozaki integrates the eastern portion of the classic limestone Central High School building with a modern addition featuring an atrium, a seven-story Extreme Screen theater, and 100,000 square feet of exhibits. The state contributed $55.5 million toward the $130-million project.
COSI will implement an energy efficiency plan to reduce energy consumption throughout the building, utilizing $500,000 appropriated in Am. Sub. H.B. 562 of the 127th General Assembly. State funds will contribute to the repair and replacement of HVAC components, and the project received Commission approval in August 2009. A $1-million appropriation in Am. Sub. H.B. 699 of the 126th General Assembly received Commission approval in May 2008, and was used to address exterior and interior signage and wayfinding issues, and to renovate existing space for exhibits.
