The Columbus Museum of Art houses an outstanding collection of late 19th- and early 20th-century American and European modern art. This collection includes major works by Monet, Matisse, Picasso, Renoir, Hopper and O'Keeffe and other spectacular examples of Impressionism, German Expressionism, and Cubism. The Columbus Museum of Art has been located in its current Renaissance Revival-style building since 1931.
In November 2000, a study, funded in part by a $248,000 General Revenue Fund grant, determined that the museum should expand at its current site rather than relocate. The state has since appropriated $2.5 million to assist the museum's planned expansion. A capital campaign is in progress, and museum officials anticipate that construction will begin in 2009 with a completion date of 2012.
