Adena Mansion and Gardens

Adena Mansion and Gardens

Facility

Adena, a Hebrew word meaning “delightful,” was the home of Thomas Worthington, Ohio’s sixth governor and Ohio’s first U.S. senator. Worthington hired Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the nation’s first professional architect and designer of the U.S. Capitol, to design his home. The 1807 home is one of only three Latrobe-designed homes still standing in the United States. The view from the east lawn of Adena is said to have inspired the design of the Great Seal of the State of Ohio. The site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2003. Main house restoration, new museum and education center construction, site improvements, and archeological investigations were completed by March 1, 2003 - the beginning of Ohio’s Bicentennial Celebration. The state contributed $5.9 million toward the restoration effort.
