The Akron Civic Theatre was built in 1929 and is one of five atmospheric theaters of its size remaining in the country. The theater reopened to the public on Nov. 5, 2002, after a $20.6 million renovation. The renovation included a stage expansion, a new concession area, and expanded ADA-compliant restrooms. State appropriations totaling $1.6 million contributed to the project.
