Local sponsors hope to create a downtown hub for the arts community in Lorain through the acquisition and rehabilitation of the historic Eagles Building. The building, built in 1918, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Plans call for the Eagles Building to serve as a community arts center connected to the adjacent Lorain Palace Theatre by a glass arcade, and to offer black-box theater productions, rehearsal space, and artist studios.
State capital funds of $309,948, part of the total $410,000 appropriated for the project, will fund the purchase of the building by the Lorain Civic Center Committee, which also owns and manages the Lorain Palace Theatre. The use of state funds for the purchase received Commission approval in May 2009.
