Constructed in 1853, the Cozad-Bates House is the only pre-Civil War residential structure remaining in Cleveland's University Circle area. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, the red-brick Italianate home may have been used as part of the Underground Railroad; the Cozad family is well documented as active in the abolitionist movement, and the University Circle area was an important center of Underground Railroad activity during the three decades preceding the Civil War.
A state capital appropriation $100,000 in Am. Sub. H.B. 562 of the 127th General Assembly will assist with the first phase of a multiphase rehabilitation project at the historic home; the initial phase will restore the building’s slate roof. Once preservation is complete and the building is accessible to the public, the Cozad-Bates House will serve as a museum documenting Cleveland's role in the anti-slavery movement.
