The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo serves 1.2 million visitors annually and offers an array of classes, camps, state-of-the-art exhibits, research and grant programs. In addition, the zoo serves as a living classroom for thousands of area school children through free educational programs.
The 127th General Assembly appropriated $150,000 in Am. Sub. H.B.562 for the African Elephant Crossing project, which will become one of only 10 African elephant breeding centers and will create a significantly larger space to house a socially complete herd of six to eight elephants. The center will strive for LEED certification, complementing the zoo's other conservation efforts. The project also will create a curriculum in partnership with the Cleveland Municipal School District.
