The Huntington Park project will create a new publicly owned ballpark for the Columbus Clippers, the AAA-affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. The new park will become an integral part of the Arena District — a sports and entertainment district adjacent to downtown Columbus. At present, the district is anchored by Nationwide Arena, and combines restaurants and retail with residential and commercial office space. The project broke ground in August 2007, and the stadium opening is planned for the 2009 season. The $71-million stadium will seat 10,000, and will replace Cooper Stadium, the Clippers’ 74-year-old home. The project received a $7-million appropriation in Am. Sub. H.B. 699 of the 126th General Assembly, and was approved by the Commission in March 2008.
