The Soldiers' & Sailors' Monument, designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of America's Treasures, was built in the 1890s in Cleveland's Public Square to commemorate the American Civil War. The monument consists of a 125-foot column topped by a Statue of Freedom; four bronze groupings depicting Navy, Cavalry, Infantry, and Artillery; four relief sculptures depicting the Civil War; and a Memorial Room listing 9,000 names of Cuyahoga County citizens who served during the war.
The Soldiers' & Sailors' Monument received a $500,000 appropriation for a project that includes various preservation and restoration initiatives, HVAC work, new exterior signs, a new security system, and ADA-compliant access to the monument. The Commission approved the project in August 2007.
