The Marietta Armory was constructed in 1914 and sits on 3.5 acres in the city's central business district. Originally constructed as a Regimental and Company B headquarters, the armory served Washington County as a departure point for soldiers leaving for service in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. Through its history, the building was also used for a variety of community purposes, but has been vacant for the last 10 years.
The city of Marietta is undertaking a project to redevelop the historic armory into a multi-use community center, including a visitor information center and transportation hub, with retail, office, and community gathering space. Armory Square will also include an Appalachian showcase and store, featuring artist demonstrations and a juried selection of handmade works including textiles, painting, ceramics, glass, furniture and ironwork. The 127th General Assembly appropriated $200,000 for the project in Am. Sub. H.B. 562.
