Built in 1921 as a single-screen movie palace, the Capitol Theatre originally featured “talkies” and vaudeville performances. The theater closed in 1985, but will reopen in October 2009 as part of the Gordon Square Arts District on Cleveland’s West Side. The district includes the Capitol Theatre, as well as the Cleveland Public Theatre and the Near West Theatre, creating a hub of cultural and artistic offerings where community redevelopment efforts also include housing, business and retail. The Capitol Theatre will reopen as a three-screen art and independent movie house.
The Capitol Theatre will utilize $500,000 in state capital funds for the purchase and installation of a digital cinema system. The funds for the Capitol Theatre are part of a larger total of $1.9 million in appropriations for the Gordon Square Arts District.
