The Amherst Historical Society promotes and educates the public about the history of the City of Amherst and surrounding towns, as well as the history of the area's once-important sandstone industry. The Society also offers educational programs, and works to preserve locally-produced sandstone architecture and other historically significant structures.
The Society has a $35,000 state appropriation in Am. Sub. H.B. 16 of the 126th General Assembly that it intends to use for improvements at its 6.5-acre Sandstone Museum Center. Potential projects include the revitalization of an old water tower, renovation of a 1925 caboose, and construction of a historical display of a train derailment that occurred in the town.
